Experience a fused glass workshop this summer

Step into the world of glass, and try your hand at a fused glass workshop this summer!

Here at Jo Downs, we are delighted to announce a series of fused glass workshops that will be running from now on. These will be based from our Launceston studio, following on from the success of our Sunningdale Workshops in Berkshire, which ran pre-covid.

Fused glass inspiration

This is a chance for you to get creative, either individually or with friends and family. No previous experience is required for you to attend these workshops, so you can start making stunning fused glass pieces straight away! Jo Downs is one of the world’s most respected fused glass designers. She draws inspiration from the wild, raw and mesmerising landscape that surrounds her studio in Cornwall, and she invites you to do the same. These fused glass workshops will provide a unique opportunity to learn from the best.

How it works

There is no stress involved when signing up for a fused glass workshop, for all equipment will be supplied! In these specific workshops, you will be working with small pieces of glass, ideal for moulding and melting into works of art, different grades of frit, which in the fused glass world is crushed glass. During the workshop you will also be using stringers, powders and liquid glass. It may sound technical, but have no fear, for there will be experienced designers and makers on hand to make sure you become a pro in no time.

The perfect gift

We have a broad selection of items that will be available for you to create, which include coasters, vases, dishes, waves, hangings, soap dishes and framed artwork. So there is something for everyone. These items, and the workshop itself, are a perfect gift for Mother’s Day, or perhaps a birthday present! So come along with family, or enjoy making these gifts for loved ones. These fused glass workshops are only suitable for children over the age of 12, and under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.

What’s involved

A fused glass workshop hosts a maximum of six people, to ensure a truly bespoke lesson that is intimate and detailed. This allows you to get the undivided attention of the course instructor, as we too want you to learn the intricacies of fused glass design. The fused glass workshop runs for three whole hours, with the bonus of a 40 minute demonstration. This really will be the perfect crafty day out for all involved, a chance to be truly present whilst creating something beautiful. The cost is £80 per person, and of this, £60 is credited towards every item you make! If the items exceed £60, then any additional amount can be paid on the day. All fused glass workshops start at 10:30am, and if you need more time to finish any items then you are welcome to stay until 4pm, if needed. (correct as of May 2023 please see Workshops for current details).
