A special and enjoyable day, professionally delivered!

Thank you for a brilliant day at the Jo Downs Studio. Ruth welcomed us and was our tutor. She guided us through everything we needed to know, demonstrating many techniques, to enable us to make a lovely piece. I was surprised at the options of glass sizes and shapes there were to choose from. You can make dishes, coasters, candle holders, vases, framed items - all beautiful pieces that look very impressive. We had the option of using small pieces of glass, different grades of frit (crushed glass), stringers, powders and liquid glass.
Just to note, you do need to be able to focus for a couple of hours at the start, there is a lot to learn, you are then free to explore and develop your ideas within a small group. The afternoon is all about the glass and working on your design. This course may seem a little expensive compared to other glass courses, however having done others you do get a far more impressive piece, and the materials and tools are substantial.
This was a day spent with my daughter - we had fun!

It is hard to fault Ruth’s impressive knowledge about all things glass fusing however … there is far too much to learn in one session alongside obvious time constraints . It would be helpful if Ruth could be cloned ! Although she does try to be everywhere and notices if someone is struggling . I do agree with a previous comment about a novice session and a limitation on what is used in order to make a piece that meets expectations . I had no great expectations of creating a masterpiece and thus was not disappointed . I have had a go at glass fusing and enjoyed the day , albeit not knowing what the heck I was doing most of the time … but I have to say that Ruth did ! Thankyou .

    Delightful day

My daughter and I had a lovely day attending the workshop at Launceston. Ruth delivered the course in a clear and fun way leaving us plenty of time to make our items. The only problem was trying to choose what to make- there were so many options. We'll just have to return and make something else 😊

I have absolutely loved both workshops I have been on. Ruth is an amazing teacher and talks you through everything you need to know. The results are fantastic and everyone goes home feeling full of achievement. My family were so surprised by what I had made. I can highly recommend this course to anyone who loves to create.

Ruth is clearly passionate about this art form and covered a vast amount of techniques in the morning session. As a complete novice however, it would have been useful had there been information/worksheets issued alongside trying to commit all information to memory throughout the morning session. The afternoon felt rushed, particularly as I waited a good 15 minutes for a sheet of glass to get my piece started and then struggled to complete on time. A suggestion would be to give less of a free rein for absolute beginners but offer a range of techniques more tailored to their level. I was pleased with my colour choices for my design and I felt I achieved balance. I was certainly not expecting to achieve anything near perfection but, unfortunately, my finished piece (wave) has come out of the kiln very noticeably warped on the left hand side - which is hugely disappointing.
    Overall I enjoyed the day.

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your piece, as we always strive to create an enjoyable and fulfilling experience for all our attendees. Our workshops are designed to give each participant creative freedom to craft something truly personal, and we've been delighted to see so many unique and beautiful pieces come to life. That said, we truly value all feedback and will take your comments on board as we continue to enhance the workshops. If there's anything we can do to enhance your experience, please feel free to get in touch. Kind regards Jo Downs Team
